Whole-Home Generator Maintenance & Repair in Salem, OR

A whole-home generator is one of those investments that earns its keep every time a storm rolls through the Willamette Valley and takes the grid with it. Unlike portable units, a standby generator starts automatically, runs your home the way it normally does, and switches back to utility power without any action on your part. Safety Home Services maintains and repairs whole-home generators for homeowners throughout Salem and the surrounding area.

Whole-home generator service involves careful evaluation of multiple components that control your power when the grid goes down. When it comes to seamless power transitions, everything from transfer switch functionality to panel work matters, and our technicians know how to handle it all. If you have a unit that hasn’t been run in a while or needs attention, we’re here to assess its condition and get it back in working order.

Common Generator Questions Worth Asking

Most standby generator manufacturers recommend annual servicing, and for good reason. A typical service visit includes an oil and filter change, spark plug inspection, battery test, and a load test to confirm the unit performs the way it’s supposed to.

Safety Home Services handles generator maintenance for homeowners throughout the Willamette Valley and flags anything that needs attention before it becomes a larger issue. Annual service is the most reliable way to keep a generator in working order. We’ll schedule your next visit before we leave if you’d like.

There’s often overlap between the two, and Safety Home Services will assess the full picture before making any recommendations.

  • Routine maintenance is time-based: annual service is the standard, with additional attention for units that run frequently
  • A generator that runs but shows reduced output, unusual noise, or smoke during operation likely needs a repair
  • A generator that won’t start at all could have a simple cause like a dead battery, or something more involved
  • Safety Home Services will separate what’s routine upkeep from what actually needs to be fixed during the same visit

You’ll get a clear breakdown of what’s maintenance, what’s repair, and what each will cost before any work begins.

Yes, and it’s one of the more common calls Safety Home Services receives. Generators that have been sitting idle often need a thorough service before they can be relied on, and some develop issues that won’t surface until the unit is actually run under load.

Safety Home Services starts with a full assessment of the generator’s condition before recommending any work. We’ll explain what we find, what it will take to get the unit back in shape, and what it will cost. Nothing gets done without your sign-off.

Yes, generator repair is a core part of what Safety Home Services does for homeowners throughout the Willamette Valley. A few of the more common culprits we diagnose:

  • A dead or failing battery, which is one of the most frequent reasons a standby generator won’t start
  • Stale fuel or a clogged fuel system, which can prevent the engine from starting or running properly
  • A faulty automatic transfer switch, which can block the generator from engaging when it should
  • Worn spark plugs, a dirty air filter, or low oil, each of which can interfere with starting

Once we know what’s wrong, we’ll explain the fix clearly and give you an accurate cost solution before work begins.

Yes, and it’s one of the more important things to check. The transfer switch is what automatically moves your home from utility power to generator power and back again, and it has to be in working order for the generator to function correctly.

Safety Home Services tests transfer switch operation as part of every service visit and can repair or replace a switch that isn’t performing as it should. If the switch has never been tested or inspected, that’s one of the first things we’ll look at. A generator with a faulty transfer switch can’t do the job it’s there for.

Providing Power for Oregon Homeowners

The electrician showed up on time and assessed the electrical issues on my girlfriends electrical panel at her house. The quote was free. He found there was a breaker that was incorrect for the panel and the main power breaker was somewhat corroded. He quoted us and then waited for the power company to shut off power and then fixed the issue promptly by installing a new correct breaker and then cleaning the panel. This was a big safety issue and the electrician waited patiently until our issue was resolved. The panel was sparking/arcing and created a fire hazard. As soon as the work was completed by Trevor the power in the home was working perfectly. We are grateful for the friendly and affordable service and especially how they were concerned with our safety and waited for the power company to turn off power and then fix our issue instead of rescheduling or going to a different job. Absolutely deserving of 5 stars!

I recently moved into my new home and had to have an EV charging plug installed and thought, well, might as well have extra outlets installed and ceiling fans too. The folks at Safety Home Services were so kind and responsive. Trevor at Safety home was able to give me an solution and start working on what needed to be done immediately. The solution and quote for everything that I needed to have done was about on par with what other places were quoting me. A bonus was the new monthly subscription at Safety Home that discounts 15% of any work done. Trevor was super professional and took time to explain all the ins and outs and made me feel good about the work that was being done. Being young and a first time homeowner can make it hard to trust whether people are being honest or trying to screw you over with work that has to be done on a home, but I never felt that way with Trevor and Victoria helping me out. They were super responsive and were always on time or communicative. I strongly recommend them for any first time homebuyers.

Safety provided excellent service! The tech (Kevin?) was a bit early, which was fine by me. I needed a new range hood/vent installed that I had already purchased on my own. He started by checking to see if the one I had was really dead or if there was a problem that could be remedied. He did discover that the fan wasn’t getting enough power to run and traced where the problem was coming from. He fixed it, but I wanted the new one installed anyway due to a color change. He got right to work getting the old one out and the new one in. He even made a trip to Home Depot to provide me with the correct light bulbs required, which I viewed as above and beyond. He was great to work with and I would recommend Safety to anyone in need of an electrician!
