What Whole-Home Surge Protection Actually Covers

A whole-home surge protection device works at the service entrance level, meaning it intercepts voltage spikes before they travel through your home’s wiring. Here’s what that covers in practice:

  • All outlets and circuits throughout the home
  • HVAC systems, refrigerators, and large appliances
  • Home entertainment systems, smart TVs, and audio equipment
  • Computers, home office equipment, and networking gear
  • Smart home devices, security systems, and automation hubs
  • EV chargers and other high-value installed equipment

What's Worth Knowing About Whole-Home Surge Protection

A whole-home surge protector is a device that mounts at your electrical panel and intercepts voltage spikes before they have a chance to travel through your home’s wiring. Spikes can originate from outside through the utility connection or from inside when large appliances and motors cycle on and off, and a panel-level device addresses both.

It covers every outlet and circuit in the house simultaneously, which is what separates it from power strip protectors that only cover what’s plugged into them. Safety Home Services installs these as a clean, panel-mounted addition to your existing setup. Once it’s in, there’s nothing to adjust or maintain.

Power surges can originate from both inside and outside the home, and a whole-home surge protector is built to handle both.

  • Utility grid fluctuations, including those caused by nearby lightning activity or switching events on the grid
  • Large appliances and HVAC systems cycling on and off, which creates internal voltage fluctuations throughout the day
  • Downed power lines or utility work in the area
  • Repeated low-level surges, which are brief and typically go unnoticed but can gradually wear down electronics over time

Understanding where surges come from is part of why panel-level protection makes more sense than covering individual outlets alone.

For a home with a significant amount of electronics, smart devices, or high-value appliances, most homeowners find it well worth the investment. A whole-home surge protection device is a modest installation that provides panel-level coverage for everything in the house at once, and it works alongside existing point-of-use protectors rather than replacing them.

Safety Home Services can walk you through what the installation involves and what it costs before you decide. There’s no pressure to move forward until you feel comfortable with the full picture.

They work at different levels of the electrical system, and for complete coverage, both have a role to play.

  • A whole-home device installs at the electrical panel and intercepts surges at the service entrance before they reach your wiring
  • Point-of-use power strips only protect the devices plugged directly into them and do nothing for fixed appliances or hardwired equipment
  • Whole-home protection covers HVAC systems, refrigerators, and anything else that can’t simply be plugged into a strip
  • Using both together gives you layered coverage: the panel-level device handles the larger spikes while point-of-use strips catch anything that remains

Safety Home Services installs the panel-level device and can talk through how to round out your full surge protection setup.

What Satisfied Customers Are Saying

The electrician showed up on time and assessed the electrical issues on my girlfriends electrical panel at her house. The quote was free. He found there was a breaker that was incorrect for the panel and the main power breaker was somewhat corroded. He quoted us and then waited for the power company to shut off power and then fixed the issue promptly by installing a new correct breaker and then cleaning the panel. This was a big safety issue and the electrician waited patiently until our issue was resolved. The panel was sparking/arcing and created a fire hazard. As soon as the work was completed by Trevor the power in the home was working perfectly. We are grateful for the friendly and affordable service and especially how they were concerned with our safety and waited for the power company to turn off power and then fix our issue instead of rescheduling or going to a different job. Absolutely deserving of 5 stars!

I recently moved into my new home and had to have an EV charging plug installed and thought, well, might as well have extra outlets installed and ceiling fans too. The folks at Safety Home Services were so kind and responsive. Trevor at Safety home was able to give me an solution and start working on what needed to be done immediately. The solution and quote for everything that I needed to have done was about on par with what other places were quoting me. A bonus was the new monthly subscription at Safety Home that discounts 15% of any work done. Trevor was super professional and took time to explain all the ins and outs and made me feel good about the work that was being done. Being young and a first time homeowner can make it hard to trust whether people are being honest or trying to screw you over with work that has to be done on a home, but I never felt that way with Trevor and Victoria helping me out. They were super responsive and were always on time or communicative. I strongly recommend them for any first time homebuyers.

Safety provided excellent service! The tech (Kevin?) was a bit early, which was fine by me. I needed a new range hood/vent installed that I had already purchased on my own. He started by checking to see if the one I had was really dead or if there was a problem that could be remedied. He did discover that the fan wasn’t getting enough power to run and traced where the problem was coming from. He fixed it, but I wanted the new one installed anyway due to a color change. He got right to work getting the old one out and the new one in. He even made a trip to Home Depot to provide me with the correct light bulbs required, which I viewed as above and beyond. He was great to work with and I would recommend Safety to anyone in need of an electrician!
